VR Case Study – Stimulating Descriptive Writing

Exploring WW1 trenches in VR

VR For Year 6

A session was booked for a year 6 class who were studying WW1. They wanted to immerse them in a ww1 experience, looking at the trenches and the living conditions of the era. The aim was to stimulate their writing and poetry. And give them a more realistic look at this time in history.

PRACTICAL VR SESSION

The children visited the World War One trenches, which  provided a visually-immersive and audio-enhanced learning opportunity, so the children had virtually explored, first-hand, the conditions and living arrangements of that era. This really supported the work  based around the text ‘War Horse’.

VR IMPACT ON LEARNING

The VR experience helped imagine the scene and the class  didn’t realise how much could be going on in a trench or battlefield. Having experienced the trenches and understood the conditions. VR stimulated talk, which is vital for children to articulate themselves and communicate their thinking.
